School Connections

Longview partners with Cornerstone Learning Community (www.cornerstonelc.com), an independent preschool through 8th grade in Tallahassee.  Students from Cornerstone's classes regularly visit the farm to focus on activities relevant to their curriculum and adjusted to match their developmental levels.  Sky Feller is our lead farm teacher, and she coordinates the field trips with teachers and plans and leads the lessons at the farm.

Field trips to the farm are also offered to other area schools and homeschool groups. Click here for pricing. Contact Sky Feller: dsfeller@icloud.com for more information about scheduling field trips and available activities.

Sample Field Trips

Below is a sample list, and their descriptions, of field trips we offer. These can be altered/tweaked to fit your students needs. Contact Sky Feller at dsfeller@icloud.com for more information or to set up a trip.

Animal Traces (K-3) Students will observe the domestic animals on the farm and search for traces of the other more secretive animals that make their home in the farm and forest. Students will cast animal tracks, look at animal scat, look at rotten logs and see nibble holes in leaves.

A Farmer’s Day (K-3rd) Caring for farm animals and raising fresh food is lots of fun. Students have the chance to dig into farm chores- caring for horses, cows and chickens and working in the garden, while learning about sustainable farming.

Map and compass (1st-5th grade) Where am I? How do I get from here to there?  Students on this trip learn to follow a map (4th and 5th graders will also learn how to use a compass) in order to find a hidden treasure.

Soil Explorations (2nd-4th) Get ready to explore soils. Students will get to dig into the world of soil in farm and forest, digging soil pits to observe soil horizons, testing soil texture, porosity, and moisture. Compost heaps will be turned and worms will be fed.

Exploring Energy flow on the farm (3-5th) We’ll take your group on a scavenger hunt of the farm and forest in search of energy sources. We’ll finish up the trip with a tour the farm’s solar panels and biodiesel plant, tracing the source of energy back to the sun.

Biotic and Abiotic (2nd-4th) Students will seek out the living and non-living components of the natural world in a scavenger hunt on the farm. Students will learn how species deal with various abiotic and biotic factors, and how farmers seek to control these factors to grow food and raise animals.

BioBlitz! (2nd-3rd, or 4th-6th) Students will participate in a lightning speed study of the diversity of living things at the farm. After an introduction to concept of biodiversity students will sample the biodiversity of an area of forest and consider the affects of various environmental changes on biodiversity.
